Baseball Unable to Overcome Early Inning in 8-6 Loss to Marist

Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – An early offensive onslaught proved too costly for the Manhattan Jaspers baseball team as they dropped the series finale against the Marist Red Foxes, 8-6, Sunday afternoon at McCann Baseball Field. The Jaspers drop to 12-25 overall and 5-10 in conference competition, while the Red Foxes advance to 14-24 overall and 7-8 in the MAAC.

"(We) battled hard but couldn't quite overcome the five-run first inning. John Kwaitkowski pitched great in the backend to keep us in the game. We battled hard and made it a game, but until we learn to play complete games, we will continue to be our own worst enemy," said head coach Dave Miller.

The Red Foxes took the early five-run lead in the first on four hits, four walks, and a pair of wild pitches. They held the edge until the top of the third when Frankie Marinelli singled through the right side for the Jaspers' third hit of the game. Perez follow suit with a base hit to move Marinelli and the leadoff slugger scored on a sac fly from Chase Swain. The Marist mound hit Drew Wyers, but retired the inning leaving two one base with minimal damage.

A two-run homer from Ethan Conrad in the bottom of the third spread the gap to 7-1 and the sophomore slugger brought in the Red Foxes final run in the fourth on an RBI double to right. Conrad went 5-for-5 on the day with three RBI and a triple shy of the cycle to lead Marist.

Marinelli and Swain combined again in the fourth and sixth innings to trim the Jaspers deficit in half, 8-4, and a lively eighth had victory in reach for the Green and White. With one out, Perez walked, and the Red Foxes signaled for a pitching change. Swain took hold of the new arm for a double through the left side to shift Perez and a sac fly to center scored the Sophomore. Dylan Mayer rolled with the momentum and drove Swain home with a base hit, and the Marist mound walked the tying run, placing Trevor Santos on base. However, a hot shot to second from Dylan Mayer was bobbled but completed to end the inning and spoil the comeback.

Marist faced three batters in the top of the ninth to claim the win.

"We are too talented to give away innings and at-bats. We will continue to work hard, fight, and push for the postseason," added Miller.

Swain finished perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4 with 3RBI, while Marinelli and Perez each tallied two hits for the Jaspers.

Kwiatkowski went 3.2 innings on the backend for Manhattan to slow the Red Foxes' offense, holding them scoreless on just three hits. Noah Mattera (3-3) took the loss, absorbing five runs in two-thirds of the first frame.

Manhattan forges ahead with a Tuesday road game at Stony Brook University before hosting Quinnipiac in MAAC play over the weekend. The Jaspers currently sit eighth in conference standings with the top six teams advancing to postseason conference play in May.
