Manhattan Opens Pursuit Of Its Fourth MAAC Title Wednesday

 Manhattan opens up play at the 2016 MAAC Championships against No. 3 Monmouth on Wednesday, May 25 at 12:00 pm in pursuit of its fourth league title. Fans can listen to a free audio stream through the Monmouth Digital Network by clicking HERE.

Santisteban Named MAAC Player Of The Year
Santisteban, the preseason MAAC Player of the Year, concluded the regular season among the league leaders in average (.376-2nd), in hits (71-1st), runs (42-5th), doubles (19-3rd), home runs (7-4th), RBI (45-2nd), walks (30-5th), slugging percentage (.587-1st) and OBP (.462 OBP-1st). 

Pena Named MAAC Rookie Of The Year
Pena took the MAAC by storm as a rookie, ranking among the league-leaders in hitting (.344-5th), doubles (21-1st), RBI (47-2nd), slugging (.579-2nd) and total bases (113-1st) while throwing out 50.0 percent of runners (25-of-50) on the bases.

This Year Against Monmouth
The teams split a pair of games at Dutchess Stadium before the Hawks took the rubber match in West Long Branch. Barrella led all players with a .600 average while Santisteban (.500), Carrera (.364) and Pena (.308) all hit above .300. Kanwisher earned the lone win with six strikeouts over 3.1 scoreless innings of relief.

Against The Hawks All-Time ... 
Santisteban is hitting .318 (14-of-44) against Monmouth pitching with four runs, three doubles and four RBI while Carrera checks in with a .333 (10-of-30) average with six runs, five doubles and five stolen bases. On the mound, Joey Rocchietti has a 2.74 ERA with nine strikeouts, against just four walks, over 19.2 innings of work in three career starts. Jacques, meanwhile, has faced the Hawks seven times and has a 1.72 ERA with a  15.2 innings.

History Repeating Itself
The last time Manhattan appeared in the MAAC Tournament, the Jaspers dropped an 8-7 decision in an elimination game to Monmouth despite rallying from five runs down in the top of the ninth.

Interesting
For the second-straight meeting between the teams, the home team will serve as the visitor in the box score. Manhattan, which is hosting the 2016 MAAC Championships, will be the visiting team as a result of the being the lower seed. In the teams' series finale this year, Manhattan was the home team in a game played at the MU Baseball Field due to severe weather at Dutchess Stadium.
