Joey Rocchietti (Green Brook, NJ / Watchung Hills) fired his second-straight complete game to lift Manhattan to an 8-2 win over Marist in the series finale between the teams.
For the second-straight week,
Joey Rocchietti (4-3) worked all nine frames and did not allow a free pass. Against the Red Foxes, the Garden State native scattered just two runs on six hits with a career-high matching seven strikeouts while working around three Jasper errors.
With the victory, Manhattan improves to 10-22 and 3-6 in the MAAC while Marist falls to 16-15 and 8-4 in the league.
Lost in Rocchietti's performance was another outstanding offensive performance by
Fabian Pena (Miami, FL / Calusa Prep). The freshman backstop went 3-for-5 with four RBI, fueled by a two-run double and a two-run single. Thanks to today's outing, Pena is now hitting .339 while pacing the team in doubles (12), homes runs (5) and RBI (30).
After being defeated in both of yesterday's contests, the Jaspers started quickly in the finale with three runs in their first trip to the plate. Junior
Jose Carrera (Miami, FL / St. Brendan) led off with a double before moving to third on
Christian Santisteban's (Sr., Miami, FL / Gulliver Prep) one-out double. Pena then opened the scoring with a two-run double down the left field line. Pena would then come around to score on junior
Jason Patnick's (Hopewell, NJ / IMG Academy (FL)) RBI single to left field.
Manhattan would continue to attack and added three more runs in the second. Freshman
Anthony Rocchietti (Green Brook, NJ / Watchung Hills) and sophomore
Paul Genners (Jacksonville, FL / Stanton College Prep) led off with singles before Carrera was plunked to load the bases. Santisteban added to the lead with a RBI ground out, chasing home
Anthony Rocchietti before Pena crushed a two-run single to score Genners and Carrera in extending the advanage out to 6-0.
That would be more than enough for
Joey Rocchietti, who yielded an unearned run in the third and another score in the fifth.
The Jaspers would reclaim their six-run advantage when Santisteban was plunked with the bases loaded in the sixth before the Florida native plated Carrera with a RBI single in the eighth.
For the day, Marist was just 1-for-12 against Rocchietti with runners on base, including 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and 0-for-10 with two outs.
Santisteban finished up 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI while Carrera was 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs.
Also recording multiple-hits was Patnick, who was 2-for-5 with a RBI, and
Anthony Rocchietti, who finished up 2-for-5 a double and two runs.
Manhattan returns to action against NYIT on Tuesday, April 19 at MCU Park in Brooklyn with first pitch slated for 6:30 pm.
