Day One Recap

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Manhattan College track & field team concluded competition at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Outdoor Champioinships from the Rider University Track & Field Complex on Sunday.  Sitting in third after Day One, the Jasper men rallied to capture second place in the team standings.  The Manhattan women also placed third, just 8.5 points behind second-place Rider.

Trailing Rider by seven points entering the day, the men's team got off to a good start on Sunday, as Ferguson Amo (Philadelphia, Pa.), Anthony Hall (Mountainville, N.Y.), Hayden Clarke (Townsville, Australia) and Mohamed Koita (Cergy, France) grabbed third place in the 4x100 meter relay (42.48).  Hall also took second in the 100 meters (11.07) and fifth in the 200 meters (22.46), while also helping the Jaspers grab third place in the 4x400 meter relay.  Abdias Myrtil (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.), meanwhile, was fourth in the 100 (11.17).

Greg Perrier (Dix Hills, N.Y.) led a 5-6-7 showing in the 800 meters, posting a time of 1:54.86.  Perrier also ran the anchor leg in the 4x400 relay.  In the individual 400 meters, Sheldon Derenoncourt (Patchogue, N.Y.) won the silver medal in a time of 48.58 seconds.

Bobby Gebhard (Saddle River, N.J.) earned a pair of second-place finishes.  After recording a 14.97-second clocking in the 110 meter hurdles, he uncorked a leap of 14.98 meters (49 feet, 1¾ inches) on his final leap to move into second place in the triple jump.  Another second-place performance was turned in by Koita in the high jump.  He cleared 2.04 m (6'8¼).

In the pole vault, which is traditionally one of Manhattan's stronger events, the Jaspers picked up 20 points to cement their hold on second place as a team.  Stefan Hoeller (Bergisch Gladbach, Germany), Justin Farrenkopf (Ellenville, N.Y.) and Savio Paul (Yonkers, N.Y.) took second, third and fourth, respectively, after all clearing 4.65 m (15'3).

Rokas Kirlys (Kamaji, Lithuania) added 10 points to Manhattan's total in the shot put and discus.  He finished third in the discus (49.39 m, 162'0) to go along with a fifth-place showing in the shot put (16.22 m, 53'2¾).

With 168 points, the Jaspers held a 31-point advantage over Rider for second place in the team standings.  New MAAC member Monmouth collected 271 points to add an outdoor title to its MAAC indoor crown.

The women's squad actually held a half-point lead over Rider with two events left, but the Broncs picked up eight points on the Jaspers in the 5000 meters and 4x400 meter relay to move ahead.  Rider finished with 133 points, while Manhattan had 124.5.  Monmouth easily won the women's title, as well, posting 306 points.

Ida Virdebrant (Nobbele, Sweden) won the MAAC title in the high jump, clearing 1.73 m (5'8).  Lina Bengtson (Malmo, Sweden), meanwhile, notched a couple of second place finishes.  She took silver in both the shot put (14.62 m, 47'11¾) and discus (47.67 m, 156'5).

The 100 meter hurdles came down to a photo finish.  The top three places were separated by 0.02 seconds, with Doreen Horschig (Lumpzig, Germany) taking second in 14.51 seconds and Bianca Marten (Waiblingen, Germany) finishing third in 14.52 seconds.  Marten added eight team points with a second-place finish in the triple jump (12.15 m, 39'10½), and she and ran the leadoff leg on the 4x100 relay.

Manhattan was also bolstered by Kathy Cadet's (Endicott, N.Y.) fourth-place showing in the 400 meter hurdles (1:03.78), as well as a fourth-place showing by Ieva Vitola (Jekabpils, Latvia) in the 200 (25.62) and Janie Turek (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.), who finished fifth in the 800 (2:17.05).

In addition, the MAAC All-Academic Team was announced.  In order to be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic Team, student-athletes must have completed at least two semesters at their institution and boast a GPA of 3.20 or higher.  Kirlys, Paul, Jacob Adams (Yonkers, N.Y.), Killian Barry (Dublin, Ireland), Jaylen Henderson (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Ian McGinnis (Philadelphia, Pa.), Kevin O'Brien (Attleboro, Mass.), Matt Perrelli (Smithtown, N.Y.), Neil Pinnock (Yonkers, N.Y.), Mikael Rojeras (Sala, Sweden) and Tom Voorheis (Syracuse, N.Y.) were honored on the men's side.
