Riverdale, NY (May 7, 2005)- Manhattan swept the Golden Griffs in a MAAC doubleheader at Van Cortlandt Park this afternoon. The Jaspers won the first game 8-1 and rallied 14 runs in the second game for a final score of 14-0. Junior Steve Bronder (Ballston Lake, NY) threw the shutout for Manhattan. The Jaspers improve to a 20-16 overall record and 10-6 MAAC record.
Manhattan began the scoring in the bottom of the first earning two runs off a double from junior John Fitzpatrick (Yonkers, NY). Lombardi then brought home Fitzpatrick off a single through the left side. At the end of the first the Jaspers led 3-0.
In the bottom of the fifth with the score 5-0, senior Gary Diaz (Naugatuck, CT) earned his 200th career hit, just six away from breaking the school record of 206 currently owned by Matt Cucurullo, with a double.
Manhattan took an 8-0 lead before Canisius got on the board. Golden Griff's George Roach singled to left field bringing home Gabe Baida in the top of the seventh. The game remained scoreless for the last inning and a half.
Junior Chris Cody (Brewster, NY) pitched all nine innings striking out 11 and allowing only one run.
The Jaspers rolled past Canisius in the second game scoring six runs in the first inning. In the sixth, Fitzpatrick homered to left field bringing home freshman Matt Rizzotti (Floral Park, NY).
The Golden Griffs kept Manhattan scoreless for two innings but in the top of the fifth senior John Maser (Queens, NY) led off singling to left field to be brought home later by freshman Matt Nevins (Beacon, NY). With two outs and two runners on base, Rizzotti hit a homerun to right field giving the Jaspers a 12-0 lead. Manhattan scored two more runs in the sixth making the final score 14-0.
Bronder pitched seven innings earning nine K's allowing only two hits.
The Jaspers play Canisius again tomorrow Sunday, May 8 at 1:00 p.m. at Van Cortlandt Park in Riverdale, NY.
