Riverdale, NY (April 25, 2005)- Scoring in every inning but the third, the Jaspers used a balanced, consistent attack to defeat Rider 16-1 and sweep the three-game MAAC series at Van Cortlandt Park this afternoon.
Dom Lombardi,
Matt Rizzotti and
Nick Derba all homered for Manhattan, as
Josh Santerre gave up one run over eight innings for his third win of the season.
With the Jaspers leading 4-1 entering the bottom of the fifth, Manhattan broke the game open by posting five runs during the frame. With the bases loaded,
Nunzio Franzese singled to bring home one, and after two Jasper batters were retired, Lombardi unloaded the bases by driving one over the left-center field fence to put Manhattan ahead 9-1.
Manhattan continued to tack on the runs, posting two runs on four hits in the sixth, a single run on Derba's home run in the seventh, and four more on Rizzotti's grand slam in the eighth inning.
Franzese and
John Maser each finished with three hits, two runs and an RBI for Manhattan, which pounded out 19 hits against four Rider hurlers.
Winning pitcher
Josh Santerre (3-2) made those runs stand up, scattering eight hits over eight innings, while striking out five and walking only one batter. Santerre also got some help from Derba, his battery mate, who threw out three runners trying to steal during the game.
Brian Fulcher pitched a scoreless ninth to close it out for Manhattan. Erik Holck (1-3) gave up eight runs, six earned, and nine hits in four-plus innings in defeat for the Broncs.
Currently 16-11 and 8-3 in the MAAC, the Jaspers will return to action on Wednesday, April 27, when they will travel to play Columbia in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
