New Rochelle, NY (April 16, 2005)- Chris Cody ran his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 29 innings after twirling a complete game, six-hit shutout en route to an 8-0 Manhattan win in the first game of a MAAC doubleheader this afternoon at Salesian Field. The Gaels defeated the Jaspers, 13-0, in the nightcap.
Manhattan jumped on the Iona starter in the top of the first. Nick Derba doubled home Gary Diaz for the game's first run before Matt Rizzotti doubled him home. Marc Giordano singled home Rizzotti one batter later to give Cody a 3-0 lead before he even took the mound.
Diaz brought home two more in the top of the sixth with a two-RBI single before Rizzotti iced the game with a three-run homer, his fifth of the season, two batters later.
Cody scattered six hits while striking out seven to run his record to 5-0 and lower his season ERA to 1.73. He had tallied 22 strikeouts over his last three games.
In the second game, Iona's bats came alive, scoring three in the first and two more in the third to open a 5-0 lead. The Gaels added three more in the fourth and five in the sixth to provide the final margin.
Manhattan managed four hits, with Eric Nieto going 2-2.
The two teams conclude the three game set Sunday at 12 noon.
