BASEBALL OVERPOWERS SAINT PETER'S IN DOUBLE HEADER SWEEP

GAME 2 BOX SCORE

Jersey City, NJ (March 27, 2005)- Nick Derba had six hits, including two doubles and his second home run of the season, helping Manhattan to a doubleheader sweep over Saint Peter's, 25-3 and 10-2, in the first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference games of the season for both teams Saturday afternoon.

Derba was 3-for-5 with a double and homer, scoring five runs and driving in two, as the Jaspers powered their way to a 25-3 win in the first game. He was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Manhattan's 10-2 win in the nightcap.

Manhattan is 7-8 overall and 2-0 in the MAAC following the sweep. Saint Peter's drops to 1-12 overall and 0-2 in the MAAC.

In the opener, Manhattan had already built a comfortable 10-0 lead through seven innings before turning the game into a rout with six runs in the eighth inning and nine more in the ninth.

Chris Cody raised his season record to 3-0 with 7 shutout innings, allowing 5 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 8. Saint Peter's Grevin Rodriguez (0-4) took the loss, going the first 5 innings and allowing 8 runs on 8 hits. He struck out 7 and walked 5. In addition to the walks, Rodriguez was hurt by the long ball, surrendering both Manhattan homers.

In addition to Derba, the Jaspers' first-game hitting stars included: Nunzio Franzese (3-for-6, 3 runs, 2 RBI); Dom Lombardi (2-for-5, 4 runs, 4 RBI); Matt Rizzotti (2-for-3, 3 runs, 3 RBI) and John Mazer (3-for-5, 2 runs, 4 RBI).

Saint Peter's, which got its three runs in the eighth inning, had 10 hits in the game, led by freshman Dennis Alexander (2-for-3).

In game two, Manhattan got all the runs it would need in the first inning against Saint Peter's Adam Myers (0-3). With two out, the Jaspers got timely back-to-back doubles from Gary Diaz (two RBI) and Derba.

Saint Peter's got a run back in the bottom of the second, but Manhattan answered with three more runs in the top of the third, keyed by John Fitzpatrick's two-run homer.

Trailing, 6-1, the Peacocks scored a run in the bottom of the third. Saint Peter's had the bases loaded with two out, but Manhattan's starting and winning Josh Santerre (1-1) came up with a strike out to douse the threat.

The Jaspers added four runs over the next three innings to secure the win for Santerre, who pitched 6 innings, allowing 6 hits and 2 runs, with 7 strikeouts. Myers, the losing pitcher, worked 4.2 innings and allowed 9 runs on 13 hits and 3 walks, while striking out 5.

In addition to Derba's 3-for-4 in the second game, Lombardi, the sophomore, was 3-for-5, with 3 runs scored and an RBI. Six different Jaspers stroked one double apiece in the game.

Saint Peter's got six hits, with Wayne Guarino and Jared Fowler picking up two hits apiece.

Manhattan is scheduled to visit Saint Peter's for a single game on Monday at noon.
