BASEBALL SPLITS TWIN BILL AT MARYLAND EASTERN SHORE

GAME 2 BOXSCORE

Princess Anne, MD (February 20, 2005)- Manhattan split a double header with Maryland Eastern Shore this afternoon, winning game one 10-3, before falling in the nightcap, 3-2.

In the first game, UMES jumped on Jasper starter Steve Broder, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first, but Bronder held the Hawks to just one single over the next four innings, as Manhattan rolled to the 10-3 win.

Manhattan scored seven runs on five hits in the top of the third to blow the game open. Nunzio Franzese started things off with an RBI sacrifice fly, before Eric Nieto, Nick Derba, and Gary Diaz ran off three straight hits, scoring four Jasper runs. After an out, John Fitzpatrick connected on a two run homer.

Manhattan added a run on a Derba groundout in the third, and Diaz and Matt Rizzotti connected on back-to-back roundtrippers to provide the final margin.

Diaz paced Manhattan, going 3-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Bronder takes his first win of the season, going five innings, giving up three runs on five hits. Kyle Wirtz closed out the game, throwing two perfect innings to end the game.

In game two, the Hawks again got out to an early lead, scoring twice in the bottom of the first off Manhattan starter Josh Santerre. But like the opener, Santerre settled down, scattering three hits over the next four innings. However, the Jasper bats were kept in check over the first five innings.

Manhattan was able to crack the scoreboard in the sixth, tying the score at 2-2 on a Derba RBI single and a Ryan Marcoux RBI sacrifice fly.

The score would remain 2-2 into the bottom of the seventh, when UMES would score the winning run on a hit batsman, a sacrifice bunt, and a RBI double.

Santerre allowed two runs on six hits over five innings in the loss.

Manhattan returns to action on Saturday, February 26, playing the first two of a three game set at Davidson. The first game is slated to begin at 12:00 p.m.
