Princess Anne, MD (February 19, 2005)- Manhattan opened the 2005 season with a 10-0 shutout of Maryland Eastern Shore this afternoon.
Chris Cody and
Jesse Darcy combined to shutout the Eagles, allowing just seven hits while striking out eight.
Cody went the first five innings to earn his first win of the season, while Darcy worked the final four innings to pick up his first save of the year.
The Jaspers tallied 13 hits en route to 10 runs, with
Matt Rizzotti leading the way, going 4-5 with an RBI in his collegiate debut.
John Fitzpatrick went 3-4 with 3 RBI, while
Phil Kuhner went 3-5 and freshman
Eric Nieto went 2-5.
The Jaspers got things started from the start, as Manhattan's first two batter reached on walks. Rizzotti, in his first collegiate at-bat, singled to left, driving home
Nick Derba.
With Cody and Darcy in control, the Jaspers padded their lead, adding single runs in the third, on a Fitzpatrick single, in the sixth, when
Sly Gutierrez was balked home, and in the seventh, when Fitzpatrick singled home Rizzotti.
Manhattan blew the game open in the ninth, pushing five runs across the plate.
Pat Reynolds and Gutierrez each scored on walks, before
Ryan Marcoux put a ball past the Maryland Eastern Shore leftfielder, cleaning the already loaded bases.
Manhattan concludes the three game series at Maryland Eastern Shore with a double header, scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, February 20.
