Lawrenceville, NJ (May 9, 2004)- Manhattan split a MAAC double header today at Rider, falling in game one, 14-6, before bouncing back with a 5-2 win on the nightcap. Josh Santerre went the distance in game two, striking out nine for his team-leading sixth win of the season. Manhattan is now 17-22-1, 10-8 in MAAC play.
In the nightcap, Rider (17-24, 9-11 MAAC) got on the board first, plating a run in the bottom of the first before the Jaspers answered with two runs in the top of the second, an a RBI single by Frank Cappello and a RBI double by Sylvester Gutierrez.
The Broncs knotted the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth, but Manhattan score a run in the sixth on a Josh Greco RBI single, and added two insurance runs in the seventh, the first on a RBI single by Sam Deluca and the second when Nick Derba scored on a wild pitch by the Rider pitcher.
Santerre (6-4) allowed two runs while striking out five over 5.1 innings, and Mike Parisi came on in the sixth, going the last 1.2 innings with four strikeouts, including the side in the seventh, for his second save of the year. Mike Rakoczy (3-2) was tabbed with the loss for Rider.
In the first game, after the Jaspers took an 1-0 lead in the second when Deluca scored on a passed ball, Rider responded with 10 consecutive runs over the next five innings, scoring four in the second, one each in the third and fourth, and four more in the sixth to take a 10-1 lead.
Manhattan answered back in the seventh, plating five runs on six hits, the first four coming on a grand slam by Derba, and the last on a RBI double by Matt Cucurullo to pull the Jaspers within four at 10-6.
Unfortunately, the Broncs played four runs in their half of the seventh to extend the lead to 14-6.
Jesse Darcy (2-4) took the loss for Manhattan, while Joe Moronese (3-5) was the winner for Rider.
The teams conclude their three-game series tomorrow, Sunday, May 9, with a nine inning game slated to begin at 12 noon.
