Riverdale, NY (May 2, 2004)- Manhattan starter
Chris Cody settled down after allowing three runs over the first three innings, retiring 15 straight batters from the fourth through the eighth as the Jaspers posted a 6-3 win over Saint Peter's today at Van Cortandt Park.
Chris Gaskin went 3-4 and fell a home run short of the cycle, adding two RBI and two runs scored as Manhattan improves to 15-21-1 overall and 9-7 in MAAC play.
Saint Peter's (7-24, 3-15 MAAC) plated two runs in the top of the first inning as Lou Proietti singled home Nick Edwards and Jeff Prosdocimo.
The Jaspers answered with a run in the bottom of the second, when
John Fitzpatrick singled home Gaskin, who had connected on a one out triple to right center, to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Peacocks extended the lead to 3-1 in the top of the third when Frank Salvano belted a solo homer down the left field line.
Manhattan responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs on four hits to take a 4-3 lead. With the bases loaded and one out,
Matt Cucurullo drove in
John Maser with a RBI groundout before Gaskin doubled home
Sam Deluca and
Nick Derba.
The Jaspers added two insurance runs in the fifth, as
Josh Greco doubled home Gaskin, who had singled, and Fitzpatrick, who had walked.
Gaskin had a chance to hit for the cycle, needing only a home run as he came to bat in the bottom of the seventh, but, after sending one deep to left but foul, struck out.
After issuing a leadoff walk in the top of the fourth, Cody retired the next 15 batters before, after a single and an out in the ninth, gave way to
Steve Bronder, who retired the next two batters for his first save of the year.
Cody (3-0) went 8.1 innings, allowing three runs while striking out nine. Dan Cainas (1-6) went the distance for Saint Peter's, giving up six runs while striking out eight.
Manhattan gets back in action on Tuesday, May 4, when the Jaspers travel to Staten Island to take on Wagner. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
