Riverdale, NY (May 1, 2004)- Manhattan scored nine runs in the final two innings to post a 13-1 win over Saint Peter's in the second game of a MAAC double header today at Van Cortlandt Park. Matt Cucurullo went 4-4 with five RBI for the Jaspers. Saint Peter's won the first game, 5-1 behind a complete game from Sean Spicer. Manhattan is now 14-21-1, 8-7 in MAAC play.
Saint Peter's (7-23, 3-14 MAAC) got on the board first in game two, plating a run in the top of the first on a RBI double by Jared Fowler. The Jaspers answered with two runs in the bottom of the first on a two-run double by Cucurullo, plating Frank Cappello and Nick Derba, who had reached on a single and walk, respectively.
Manhattan extended its lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the third on RBI singles from Sam Deluca and Cucurullo.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Jaspers blew the game open, plating four runs on five hits. Chris Gaskin drove in the first run of the inning with a single through the left side, scoring Deluca. After Josh Greco singled to load the bases, John Fitzpatrick singled home Cucurullo. Sylvester Gutierrez followed with a walk, forcing home Gaskin, before John Maser plated Greco with a RBI fielder's choice to make the score 8-1.
The Jaspers greeted Saint Peter's reliever Grevin Rodriguez in the bottom of the sixth with five straight hits, including a solo homer from Derba to lead off the inning and a two-run blast from Cucurullo, scoring Deluca. After two singles and a flyout, Tyler Sadler drove home Gaskin with a groundout and Maser followed with a RBI single to make the score 13-1 in favor of Manhattan.
Josh Santerre (5-4) went five innings for Manhattan in the win, scattering nine hits and allowing just one run. Mike Parisi went the final two innings, striking out three. Doug Grant (1-8) pitched five innings for Saint Peter's in the loss.
In the first game, Cucurullo plated Derba with a RBI single and the Jaspers loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the first, but could not push across another run. Manhattan loaded the bases again in the bottom of the second with two outs, but Spicer induced a groundout to escape the jam before settling down and allowing just three hits the rest of the way.
Manhattan started Jesse Darcy faced the minimum through five innings before the Peacocks finally cracked the scoreboard, plating four runs on four hits in the top of the sixth. Mark Ortiz doubled home Rob Scordato with the first run, Jeff Prosdocino singled home two runs, scoring Ortiz and Wayne Guarino, and Jared Fowler's sacrifice fly scored Prosdocino to make the score 4-1 in favor of Saint Peter's. The Peacocks added a run in the top of the seventh on a RBI single by Guarino to provide the final margin.
Spicer (3-6) allowed one run on five hits, going the distance for the win. Darcy (2-3) went eight innings in the loss.
The two teams will complete their three game series with a nine inning game tomorrow, May 2. The first pitch is scheduled for 12 noon.
