GAME 2 BOXSCORE
Syracuse, NY (April 24, 2004)- Manhattan dropped the first game of a MAAC double header with conference-leading, 11-1, before handing the Dolphins their first MAAC loss of the season by taking game two, 5-2. Dating back to last season's MAAC Championship run, Le Moyne had won 20 consecutive games against league opponents. Manhattan also stopped a 10-game losing streak against the Dolphins.
In game one, Lemoyne (20-14, 14-1 MAAC) tabbed Jasper starter Josh Santerre for three runs in the first inning on a RBI single and back-to-back RBI doubles. The Dolphins would add two more in the third on consecutive RBI singles, another run in the fourth, and blew the game open with four more in the fifth.
LeMoyne starter Matt Scherer was perfect through the first 6.1 innings before Nick Derba doubled down the left field line to break up the perfect game and no-hitter. Sam Deluca singled Derba to third before Matt Cucurullo's sacrifice fly plated Derba to make the score 10-1 Lemoyne. The Dolphins would add a run in the bottom of the seventh and Scherer would allow just one more hit, a ninth inning single to Derba to improve to 5-2 on the season.
The second game started in similar fashion to the first, as Lemoyne plated two runs in the bottom of the first off Manhattan starter Jesse Darcy. However, Darcy would settle down, retiring the next 14 batter and allowing just three singles the rest of the way to improve to 2-2 on the season.
The Jaspers knotted the score at 2-2 in the third inning. Deluca drove home John Maser with Manhattan's first run and Josh Greco plated Frank Cappello on a fielder's choice.
Manhattan extended its lead to 3-2 in the sixth with an unearned run, and sealed the win with two runs in the seventh with a bases loaded walk and a Gary Diaz RBI single.
The teams complete the series with a nine inning game on Sunday, April 25.
