Chris Cody threw eight innings, allowing two runs while striking out eight, and Manhattan used a four-run fourth to break open a close win as the Jaspers defeated Marist, 7-2, today at McCann Field on the Marist campus. Manhattan improves to 8-14-1, 4-3 in MAAC play).
The Jaspers plated two runs in the top of the first to grab an early, 2-0, lead. After back-to-back singles by
Frank Cappello and
Nick Derba began the game for Manhattan, Cappello scored on an error by the Marist (9-19, 5-4 MAAC) second baseman on a fielder's choice off the bat of
John Fitzpatrick. After a single by
Matt Cucurullo,
Josh Greco doubled home Fitzpatrick with the Jaspers' second run of the inning.
The Red Foxes knotted the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the second on an two-RBI single by Tyler Brock.
In the decisive fourth inning, an RBI groundout by
John Maser began the scoring, before
Gary Diaz scored on a passed ball. Fitzpatrick's RBI sacrifice fly plated Cappello, and Cucurullo's RBI double brought home
Sam Deluca for a 6-2 advantage.
An RBI single by
Gary Gaskin scored
Josh Greco in the seventh to complete the scoring.
After the second, Cody allowed only two Marist runners to advance into scoring position until giving way to
Steve Bronder in the ninth.
Cody (2-0) scattered five hits over his eight innings of work, and allowed just three hits, all singles, in his final six innings on the mound. All seven Marist hits were singles.
Lucas Robinson (2-3) absorbed the loss for Marist, allowing six runs, three earned, over 3.2 innings.
Cappello was one of four Jaspers to post multi-hit games, going 3-4 with two runs scored. Deluca was 4-5 with a run scored, Cucurullo was 2-4 with an RBI, and Gaskin was 2-4 with an RBI and a stolen base.
Manhattan returns to action on April 14, when the Jaspers travel to West Point, NY to take on the Army Black Knights at 3:30 p.m.
