TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida State used a 19-1 run that spanned the end of the first and the beginning of the second half to turn a four-point deficit into what would prove to be an insurmountable 14-point advantage in an 81-66 win over Manhattan in the season opener for both teams at the Tucker Center.

In the first half, the Seminoles jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead before junior Shane Richards (New York, N.Y. / York Prep) hit back-to-back three pointers, including this triple, to set an early back-and-forth theme. FSU then reclaimed the lead before senior RaShawn Stores (Bronx, N.Y. / Robinson School (N.J.)) connected on this three pointer.

With the score tied at 9-9, junior Rich Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Vermont Academy (N.Y.) canned a three pointer to start an 8-0 run that would help give the Jaspers the lead for the bulk of the opening stanza. Junior Ashton Pankey followed with two of his game-high 10 free throws before sophomore Jermaine Lawrence (Queens, N.Y. / Cincinnati) capped the spurt with this three pointer to make it a 17-9 game with just over 13 minutes remaining in the opening stanza.

The lead would grow to 10 for Manhattan at 23-13 with 7:26 remaining in the first half following this Richards' triple and three Tyler Wilson (Bronx, N.Y. / Cardinal Hayes) free throws as the Jaspers appeared to be in control.

Unfortunately, Florida State would outscore its guests 24-8 to finish out the first, including notching a half-ending 11-1 run, in claiming a 37-31 halftime lead.

Over the fateful seven-plus minute stretch, Manhattan was just 1-for-10 from the floor while committing five turnovers that turned into six Seminole points.

Intermission did nothing to quell the Florida State momentum as the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) representative scored the first eight points of the second half, extending the lead out to 45-31 with 17:52 remaining following an Aaron Thomas dunk.

Stores quelled the spurt with a pair of three pointers while trimming the deficit to 47-37 with 15:29 remaining.

Later in the half with the deficit at 12, freshman Samson Akilo (Lagos, Nigeria / Nazareth (N.Y.)) converted his first collegiate field goal before Pankey converted two more at the line. Wilson then followed suit to trim the deficit to 53-47 with 11:23 remaining.

Robbie Berwick briefly stopped the Jaspers' momentum with a three pointer before Pankey converted three more free throws to again make it a two-possession game.

Following a stop on the defensive end, senior Emmy Andujar (Bronx, N.Y. / Rice) split a pair to trim the deficit to 56-51 with just over nine minutes to play. Unfortunately, that was close as Manhattan would get the rest of the way.

Phil Cofer responded with a pair from the line and Brandon converted a layup off an offensive rebound to spark a 10-2 run over the next 3:14 in helping extend the Seminole advantage out to 66-53 with 4:55 to play.

Florida State's lead would grow to 17 before the Seminoles posted the aforementioned 81-66 victory.

Fueled by three first-half triples, Richards scored a game-high 17 points while Pankey notched 12 of his 14 points after intermission to lead the way on offense for the Jaspers. Andujar paced all players with nine rebounds to go along with nine points.

Despite losing the rebounding battle (33-32), Florida State able to post a 32-12 advantage in the paint while shooting a blistering 57.5 percent (23-for-40) from the floor.

Aaron Thomas paced five double-figure scorers for the Seminoles with 14 points.

Manhattan returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 18 in an 11 a.m. match-up with Massachusetts that will air nationally on ESPN2.
