FAIRFIELD, CT – The Manhattan softball team split their road doubleheader today at Fairfield, winning the first game 4-2, before dropping game two, 7-2.
Game 1 – Manhattan 4, Fairfield 2
Manhattan came out strong today in game one, getting the bats going in the first inning. Gabriella Mazzotta got on base to get it started, before Maddy Weir launched a two-run home run to take an early lead. Lindsey Hoag would come up next, and send a triple into left field.She would be driven home by a sacrifice fly off the bat of Sophia Kisloski, to give the Jaspers a 3-0 edge after one. The Jaspers would get another scoring opportunity in the third, loading the bases, but would only convert one run out of it, off another sacrifice fly by Kiseloski. Fairfield would answer in the bottom half of the inning, recording an RBI triple, followed by an RBI bunt single to lower the gap to 4-2.
Mollie Charest, the starter for the Jaspers today, would not let up another run for the rest of the contest picking up the win, after throwing 6 2/3 innings and striking out nine. Ava Metzger would come in for a one-out save for Manhattan.
Game 2 – Fairfield 7, Manhattan 2
Fairfield got started in game two with an RBI single in the first inning. The Stags would come back in the second with another RBI single to make the score 2-0, which would hold until the fifth inning. Manhattan got two runners on for Anissa Villalobos, who would slap a single into right field, driving in both of them to tie the score.
Fairfield would rally in the fifth, connecting on five hits in the inning, that would score three runs, via two RBI singles. Fairfield would go into the sixth inning with a 5-2 lead. The Stags got two runners on in the sixth, before clubbing 2 RBI double to extend the lead to 7-2. Manhattan would go down in order in their final at bats, taking a 7-2 loss in game two.
Kiseloski was charged with the loss today for the Jaspers, while Bailey Taylor collected the win for the Stags.
Up Next: Manhattan returns home this weekend to host a three-game series with Saint Peter's. The Jaspers and Peacocks will play a doubleheader, Saturday April 13th starting at noon, before playing the third and final contest of the weekend Sunday April 14th, at noon.
