RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Manhattan women's lacrosse team triumphed over Sacred Heart in its season opener in overtime, 14-13, on Saturday afternoon at Gaelic Park.
Julianna Iovine supplied the game-winner in overtime for the Jaspers off a free-position shot.
Reagan Mullins opened the scoring for Manhattan (1-0) this afternoon with a tally inside the first three minutes. This was shortly followed by two more goals, the first from Iovine off an assist from Jillian Reiner, and the second by Bonitch.
Sacred Heart (0-1) responded with a goal to end the Jasper scoring run in the first quarter. The Jaspers answered only three minutes later with another one of Mullins' shots finding the back of the net.
The Jaspers' scoring run began to slow as the Pioneers scored three quick goals in the second quarter to bring the score to 7-4.
Sacred Heart continued to creep up on Manhattan's lead in the second half, tying the game at 9-9 at the end of the third. The Jaspers were able to start the fourth off with a goal from Julia Fernandes, 10-9.
After back-and-forth goals by each team, the Jaspers took a two-point lead over the Pioneers that carried them to an overtime victory, credited to Lovine's game-winning goal.
Pacing the scoring for the Jaspers this afternoon was Mullins with a four-goal performance. Following behind her were Reiner and Fernandes with hat tricks.
Next for the Jaspers is the first road game next Saturday at noon against first-year program Fairleigh Dickinson in Teaneck, N.J.
