NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Manhattan dropped game two of its series with Iona, 8-1, on Friday afternoon.
Iona (6-40, 6-17 MAAC) scored the first eight runs of the game before Manhattan (23-26, 11-12) picked up its run in the bottom of the ninth when
Trevor Santos walked with the bases loaded.
The Gaels got three RBI from Chris Mariani and two more from Nick Carnevale. Carnevale went 4-for-5 at the plate and scored a run.
Carnevale drove in the second and third runs of the game for the Gaels. In the second, Carnevale doubled to right-center. Iona took a 3-0 lead on Carnevale's triple down the right-field line, scoring Phoenix Bowman.
Mariani made it 6-0 with a two-RBI single to center in the fifth. The Gaels' designated hitter capped the scoring with a solo homer in the seventh.
Manhattan tried to mount a comeback in the ninth. The Jaspers loaded the bases with a single, walk, and a hit by pitch. Santos then drew the bases-loaded walk after a strikeout to get the Jaspers on the board.
Matt Padre and
David Bermudez followed Santos and were retired in order with one away.
Jordan Warecke started for the Jaspers and allowed six earned runs over six innings. Blake Helmstetter tossed five shutout innings for the Gaels to collect his second win of the season.
The two teams return to action Saturday for the final game of the series and the regular-season finale for both teams. The first pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. on ESPN3 tomorrow morning.
