Manhattan Shutouts Merrimack Sunday

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Manhattan defeated Merrimack 10-0 on Sunday afternoon at University Field to wrap up their weekend slate. The Jaspers' offense collected 14 hits, and starting pitcher Jordan Warecke pitched six scoreless innings in the win.

In the first inning, Frankie Marinelli set the tone with a lead-off double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Then, Manhattan loaded the bases when David Bermudez got hit by a pitch, and Matt Padre walked, setting the stage for a two-run single by Pete Durocher that gave Manhattan a 2-0 lead.

Manhattan's offense seized control of the game in an eight-run third inning that brought 12 Jaspers to the plate.

Jack Lynch drove in the first two runs of the inning when he doubled to right field to score Harrison Treble and Padre, who reached on a throwing error and a walk, respectively. Durocher followed that up with a double to left that scored Lynch to make the score 5-0. After advancing to third on a balk, Durocher scored on a single up the middle by Dylan Ocasal.

The next batter was Zahan Meyer, who singled to put runners on the corners before Marinelli drove in two more runs with a single of his own. With the Jaspers leading by eight and having batted around the lineup, Bermudez doubled to right field to score Marinelli, before Treble singled through the right side to score Bermudez and cap the scoring at 10.

Merrimack only mustered three hits off Warecke, who retired 14 straight batters spanning the second and sixth innings. Warecke finished with five strikeouts before Kyle Lesler pitched the final three innings. Lesler registered three strikeouts with no hits allowed for his second save of the season.

Cedric Gillete gave up six runs in 2.2 innings of work for Merrimack. The Warriors used five pitchers in total.

Manhattan improves to 8-9 on the season and will play at Columbia on Wednesday, March 23, at 3:30 p.m.
