NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Manhattan dropped the last game of the regular season to Iona on Saturday, losing in a 3-0 sweep. The final scores were 25-14, 25-14, and 26-24.
The first set opened up strong, with the Jaspers riding right next to the Gales, even holding the lead for some time. However, the set began to get away from the Jaspers when the Gales went on a seven-point run. The Jaspers could not get back into the set after the run before dropping the opening set. The second followed a similar script. The Jaspers scored the first point of the set off a block by
Kelly Markowski and
Ananda Burgos. The Gaels used an early 7-1 run to take a 9-3 lead before another 7-1 stretch put the set out of reach for the Jaspers.
The third set showed the Jaspers' offense in full effect. The Jaspers took and maintained the lead from the first serve until about mid-set. This set was nothing like the first two, with the lead being no larger than a point or two for either side. Just as it looked like the set was getting away, with the Gales building a lead, the Jaspers went on a seven-point run, kicked off by three errors, followed by a kill by
Julia Menocal, to tie the set at 19. After this, the score was tied six more times. Ultimately, the Gales slipped three points past the Jaspers to win the set 26-24.
The leaders of the game were Menocal with 16 kills and three digs, followed by Camila Gomez with seven kills and 14 digs.
Julieanne McKee dished out 21 assists for the Jaspers. For the fifth match in a row,
Sophia Lotto had a team-high for digs, 14, which she shared with Gomez.
The MAAC Championship begins on Nov. 16, In Orlando, Florida, at the Disney Wide World Sports Arena.
