Lexington, VA - Ryan Perouty scored four goals, including the game winner with 2:16 to play, to lift VMI to an 11-10 come-from-behind win over Manhattan.
The Keydets improve to 1-0 while the Jaspers fall to 1-1.
In defeat, junior
Luke Hanson (Middletown, NY / Minisink Valley) scored three goals with two assists to lead the way on offense, while sophomore
Jake Nicolosi (West Islip, NY / West Islip) and freshman
Tadhg O'Riordan (Tappan, NY / Tappan Zee) each scored twice.
VMI opened the scoring with a pair of first-quarter goals, before O'Riordan put the Jaspers on the board midway through the second stanza. Sophomore
Sean MacKinney (Martinsville, NY / Bridgewater-Raritan) followed that up with a score off a pass from Hanson to tie it up at 2-2 with 6:40 to play until halftime.
Just eight seconds later, senior
Robert Carroll (Grosse Pointe Park, MI / Grosse Pointe South) beat the goalie for his first career goal after winning the faceoff in staking the visitors to their first lead of the game.
The Keydets ended the stanza with a pair of scores in reclaiming the lead at 4-3.
After halftime, VMI extended the lead out to 6-4 with 9:57 to play in the third when the Manhattan offense responded with five-straight goals. Hanson started the run with his second goal, before finding Nicolosi for the equalizer.
Hanson then gave the Jaspers a one-goal advantage off a
Parker Giarratana (Sr., Delray, FL / Boca Raton Community) pass. Giarratana, the reigning MAAC Offensive Player of the Week, then found the back of the net and Nicolosi capped the spurt, which took just 6:46, with his second score off a feed from sophomore
Justin Malpica (Glen Head, NY / Long Island Lutheran).
The Keydets opened the final period with three-straight goals to tie it up at 9-9, before O'Riordan reclaimed the lead for Manhattan with his second goal off a Giarratana pass with 7:56 to play.
Unfortunately, VMI would rally with two goals in posting the aforementioned 11-10 victory.
