Matt Simonetti's (Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan) complete game masterpiece lifted Manhattan to a doubleheader split at Siena as the Jaspers took game two by a 3-1 count after dropping the opener 4-0.
The Jaspers improve to 15-13 and 4-1 in the MAAC while the Saints are 5-20 and 5-3 in the league.
Game 2
Behind another dominating performance by Simonetti, Manhattan defeated Siena 3-1 in salvaging a split at the Siena Field.
The Jaspers struck first in the top of the third inning with a single score. Junior
Brandon Valls (Miami, FL / Dean CC) led off with a double before seniors
Michael Pfenninger (Hunterdon, NJ / Hunterdon Central) and
Brendan Bisset (New City, NY / Don Bosco Prep (NJ)) drew walks in loading up the bases. Junior
Fabian Pena (Miami, FL / Calusa Prep) then put the visitors on the board when he was plunked to force in Valls.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Saints posted their first major scoring threat of the game, placing runners at second-and-third only to be denied when Simonetti induced an inning-ending fly out.
Manhattan extended its advantage out to 3-0 in the top of the fifth as freshman
Matt Padre (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) delivered a one-out, bases loaded single to plate Bisset and Pena.
Joe Drpich would get one run in back in the bottom of the frame with a RBI single as Siena took advantage of a two-out Jasper error.
The Saints would later put two runners aboard in the bottom of the seventh only to be denied by Simonetti, who induced Drpich into an game-ending ground out to secure the victory.
The hard-throwing righty fanned six, including striking out the side in the sixth, while yielding just an unearned run on six hits and a walk over a dominating 7.0-inning performance in moving to 4-1. The Garden State native also extended his scoreless streak to 21.0 innings and has 25 strikeouts during that time.
Bisset went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run while Valls was 2-for-3 with a double and a run to pace a seven-hit Jasper attack. Junior
Richie Barrella (Larchmont, NY / Canterbury Prep) also extended his hitting streak to 16 games with his fifth-inning single.
Marcos Campos and Brian Kelly each had two of Siena's six to lead the way on offense.
Game 1
Siena RHP Tommy Miller struck out six while yielding just five hits in a complete game effort to lead Siena past Manhattan in game one.
The Jaspers posted their best threat in the top of the first inning as Bisset and Padre each walked and Barrella single to load the bases. Unfortunately, Miller induced an inning-ending ground out to quell the threat while setting the tone for the game.
The Saints quickly grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a Brian Kelly sacrifice fly.
Siena would add to their advantage with a pair of unearned runs in the third on a Drpich sacrifice fly and a Jordan Bishop RBI ground out.
Phil Madonna extended the Saints lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh when he scampered home on a wild pitch.
Barrella went 2-for-3 with a pair of infield hits while Padre drew two walks and graduate student
Matt Forlow (Cold Spring, NY / Haldane) singled and was plunked to round out the top offensive performers for Manhattan.
Madonna went 3-for-4 with three runs to lead the way for Siena.
The teams will conclude their series tomorrow with a single game at 12:00 pm.
