West Long Branch, N.J. - The Manhattan women's lacrosse team was defeated by Monmouth, 12-6, at Kessler Field on Wednesday evening.
With the loss, the Jaspers fall to 2-11 overall, and 0-5 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). Monmouth improves to 9-3, including a 4-0 mark in conference play.
The Hawks leapt out to a 6-0 lead in the first half before Manhattan junior co-captain Megan Yarusso (Brewster, N.Y. / Brewster) put the Jaspers on the board with 4:41 to play in the opening stanza. The goal marked the first of a game-high four for the junior on the afternoon.
The Jaspers opened the final half hour of play with a 3-1 run. Freshman Maddie Regal (Ellicott City, Md. / Howard) opened the spurt before Yarusso notched back-to-back tallies to make the score 7-4. Junior co-captain Kaitlyn Cunningham (Spring Lake, N.J. / Red Bank Catholic) recorded assists on the first two goals.
Monmouth concluded the game on a 5-2 run. Sophomore Darby Nolan (Oakridge, N.J. / Jefferson Township) and Yarusso scored for the Jaspers in that span.
Hawks' junior Marial Pierce led all players with six points (3G, 3A) in the contest. Sophomore Olivia Higson also registered a hat trick for Monmouth. Pierce also collected a game-high seven ground balls.
Jaspers' senior starting goalkeeper and co-captain Christina Fiorinelli (Massapequa, N.Y. / Massapequa) amassed 14 saves in the outing. She also collected a team-high five ground balls.
Manhattan returns to action on Saturday, April 11, when the squad hosts Delaware State for a 4:30 p.m. meeting at Gaelic Park.
