Wagner Clips Manhattan, 10-6, in Snowy Conditions

Box Score

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan women's lacrosse team fell to Wagner, 10-6, under snowy conditions at Gaelic Park on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Jaspers move to 1-1 on the season. Wagner improves to 1-2 with the victory.

Manhattan trailed by just one goal at halftime, at 4-3, but the Seahawks used a 6-3 spurt in the second half to put the game out of reach and earn the win.

Wagner scored three of the first four and four of the first six goals in the second stanza to take an 8-5 lead with 13 minutes to play. Two more Seahawks goals followed by a Megan Yarusso (Brewster, N.Y. / Brewster) tally with 3:22 remaining led to the 10-6 final.

The contest began under overcast conditions, but about two-thirds of the way through the first half, light flurries began to fall. By the time the players came out of the locker room to begin the final half hour of play, a layer of snow coated the entire playing field. The snow fell with even more force in the second half, leaving the turf very slippery. At approximately the midway mark of the second half, the officials halted play to allow the Manhattan facilities crew to shovel the restraining lines, the 12-meter fan and the 8-meter arc, before resuming play.

Junior captain Yarusso led the Jaspers in scoring, recording a hat trick in the match. Yarusso scored once in the first half and twice over the final 30 minutes of play.

Senior Domenica O'Brey (Loudonville, N.Y. / Colonie Central), junior captain Kaitlyn Cunningham (Spring Lake, N.J. / Red Bank Catholic) and junior Claire Roediger (Katonah, N.Y. / Somers) also scored. Senior Donna Jo DiNorcia picked up an assist in the game.

Three of the Jaspers' six goals came off of free position attempts.

Senior starting goalkeeper Christina Fiorinelli (Massapequa, N.Y. / Massapequa) took the loss, but made 16 saves in the contest. She also collected a game-high seven ground balls.

Junior Shea Gegan (1G, 2A), sophomore Olivia Streilein (2G, 1A) and freshman Lauren Ednie (3G, 0A) led the Seahawks with three points apiece in the outing.

The Jaspers return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 25, when they travel upstate to battle Albany. The opening draw control is slated for 3 p.m.
