WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Manhattan College track & field team traveled to the same meet for the first time this outdoor season on Saturday, as the Jaspers headed to Army's Shea Stadium for a Six-Way Meet against Binghamton, Colgate, Middlebury and Williams, as well as the host Black Knights. Manhattan picked up a total of nine event wins on the day, as the men's team finished second in the team standings and the women ended up in a tie for third.
Bianca Marten (Waiblingen, Germany) led the way with a pair of first-place showings. She took first in the long jump with a leap of 5.73 meters (18 feet, 9¾ inches). Marten then won the 100 meter hurdles in 14.12 seconds. Doreen Horschig (Lumpzig, Germany) finished second behind her teammate, posting a time of 14.43 seconds.
Lina Bengtson (Malmo, Sweden) and Lydia Wehrli (Anieres, Switzerland) also continued their solid seasons. Bengtson was first in the shot put (14.33 m, 47'0¼) and second in the discus (48.82 m, 160'2), while Wehrli won the hammer throw with a best effort of 56.85 m (186'6). Katharina Klien (Maeder, Austria) competed in three of the four throws (all but hammer) and grabbed third place in the javelin (37.67 m, 123'7).
On the track, Janie Turek (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) secured second place in the 800 meters (2:18.55), while Kathy Cadet (Endicott, N.Y.) (12.61) and Ieva Vitola (Jekabpils, Latvia) (12.66) went 3-4 in the 100 meters. Cadet and Vitola also joined with Marten and Horschig to finish third in the 4x100 meter relay (48.74).
It was also a good day for the men's team. Greg Perrier (Dix Hills, N.Y.) recorded a 1:51.01 clocking to win the 800 meters. Meanwhile, in the 200 meters, Abdias Myrtil (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) (22.36) grabbed first place, just ahead of Anthony Hall (Mountainville, N.Y.) (22.38). Myrtil and Hall also ran on the 4x100 meter relay squad that finished first in 42.28 seconds, while Hall was fourth in the 100, as well (11.22). In the 4x400 meter relay, Manhattan was third in 3:25.17.
Bobby Gebhard (Saddle River, N.J.) had a winning effort of 14.27 m (46'10) in the triple jump, and he also placed fifth in the long jump (6.47 m, 21'2¾). Dennis Eriksson (Sundsvall, Sweden) was second in the triple jump (13.57 m, 44'6¼) to go along with a third-place showing in the 110 meter hurdles (15.18). Hayden Clarke (Townsville, Australia), meanwhile finished third in the long jump with a top mark of 6.61 m (28'8¼).
Love Litzell (Ostersund, Sweden) led a 1-2-4-5 showing in the hammer throw. His winning toss was 62.27 m (204'3). Blerim Pocesta (Staten Island, N.Y.) took second in the hammer throw (59.91 m, 196'7) to go along with a second-place finish in the discus (45.60 m, 149'7) and a third-place effort in the shot put (14.77 m, 48'5½). In the javelin, Phil Ragan's (Belmar, N.J.) best performance of 60.42 m (198'3) was good for second place.
Next week, the Manhattan hammer throwers will head to Princeton University for the Larry Ellis Invitational on Friday. Most of the squad will compete at the Bulldog Invitational from Yale University on Saturday afternoon.
