ASU Invitational Friday Recap

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Manhattan College outdoor track & field team competed in a pair of meets on Saturday.  A handful of Jaspers concluded competition at the ASU Invitational from Arizona State's Sun Angel Stadium, while the majority of the squad stayed back east for the FDU Knight Classic.

In sunny Arizona, Greg Perrier (Dix Hills, N.Y.) and Mikael Rojeras (Sala, Sweden) finished 2-3 in the men's 800 meters.  Perrier's time of 1:50.68 puts him 11th on the NCAA East Preliminary Round qualifying list, while Rojeras registered a 1:51.49 clocking.  Mohamed Koita (Cergy, France) finished third in his first high jump competition since the NCAA Indoor Championships, leaping 2.08 meters (six feet, 9¾ inches).  Blerim Pocesta (Staten Island, N.Y.), meanwhile, capped his solid weekend by grabbing sixth place in the discus (an IC4A-qualifying 47.55 m, 156'0) and ninth in the shot put (14.82 m, 48'7½).

Lina Bengtson (Malmo, Sweden) also had a pair of strong performances at the ASU Invitational.  She finished sixth in both the shot put (14.53 m, 47'8) and discus (47.36 m, 155'4).  Bianca Marten (Waiblingen, Germany) competed in a pair of events, as well, finishing third in the long jump (5.74 m, 18'10) and fourth in the triple jump (11.68 m, 38'4).  Ida Virdebrant (Nobbele, Sweden) added a fifth-place showing in the women's high jump (1.66 m, 5'5¼).

The conditions were markedly different in Palisades Park, NJ., where the FDU Knight Classic was held in a steady rain that severely impacted performances.  Nevertheless, several Jaspers had strong showings in what was the outdoor season opener for many.

In the men's 800, Tom Bonaro (Pearl River, N.Y.) finished first in a time of 1:59.49.  Anthony Colasurdo (Lanoka Harbor, N.J.), meanwhile, took second in the 1500 meters (4:12.91), just ahead of teammate Shane Beyer (Brick, N.J.) (4:22.45).  The Jaspers also went 2-3 in the men's 100 meters, with Abdias Myrtil (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) being clocked in 11.65 seconds and Anthony Hall (Mountainville, N.Y.) recording a time of 11.67 seconds.

Neil Pinnock (Yonkers, N.Y.) placed first in the long jump (6.58 m, 21'7¼) and third in the triple jump (12.40 m, 40'8¼), while Stefan Hoeller (Bergisch Gladbach, Germany) took second in the shot put (12.23 m, 40'1½).  Edward Brentnall (Atlanta, Ga.) won the men's hammer throw (50.98 m, 167'3), and Phil Ragan (Belmar, N.J.) added a second-place showing in the javelin (52.12 m, 171'0).

On the women's side, Katharina Klien (Maeder, Austria) was first in the discus (38.53 m, 126'5) and second in the javelin (33.47 m, 109'10).  Kathy Cadet (Endicott, N.Y.) captured first place in the 100 (13.01), while Janie Turek (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) took second in the 800 (2:22.68) and Milena Stoicev (Nis, Serbia) placed third in the 1500 (4:57.33).

Manhattan will split the squad again next weekend.  The Jaspers have athletes entered in both Ramapo's Roadrunner Invitational, as well as the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton.
