BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Andrew Gorecki had three hits in three at-bats, including a pair of run-scoring doubles, but Campbell used a six-run fifth inning to break open a 2-1 game on its way to a 12-2 win over Manhattan in the Jaspers' season opener on Friday night.

Inclement weather in the Carolinas on Friday altered the day's schedule, forcing the Jaspers to play a single game against the host Camels instead of the scheduled two games against Delaware and Campbell.

Campbell, which improved to 4-1 on the season, pushed across a run in the bottom of the first against Manhattan freshman right-hander Matt Simonetti but Simonetti struck out Clayton Brown with the bases loaded to limit the damage.

The Camels scratched out another run in the third to make it a 2-0 game. With two outs in the frame, Chris Reynolds nailed Matt Nadolski attempting to steal second to end that inning.

The Jaspers got on the board in the next half-inning. The first two batters of the inning, Christian Santisteban and Vin Teixeira, each reached base on infield errors and Andrew Gorecki took advantage, driving a run-scoring double the other way to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Simonetti hung up a zero in the bottom of the fourth, but Campbell scored six times on five base hits in the fifth to move ahead 8-1.

Gorecki drove home Santisteban in the sixth after Santisteban reached on a one-out error, making it 8-2 Camels. Campbell followed with three runs in the seventh and one in the eighth for the final margin.

Campbell starter Heath Bowers allowed two unearned runs in seven innings and struck out nine.

Manhattan is back in action on Saturday, February 22 at the Campbell Invitational. The Jaspers will face Delaware at noon and play the Camels again at 7 p.m. Saturday night.

NOTES:

Sean Abbate was the first reliever out of the bullpen ... he struck out two in 1 2/3 innings ... Mike Vocatura and Joe Jacques each made their collegiate debuts on the mound ... Evan Brown walked twice in four plate appearances in his first collegiate start ... Campbell swept a three-game series against La Salle last weekend.
