STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Manhattan College men's and women's cross country teams began their 2013 campaigns on Saturday afternoon at the Stony Brook Season Opener.  Competing over the short-course distances of 4000 (women) and 6000 meters (men), the Jaspers performed well.  Manhattan placed third on the men's side, while the women's squad secured a fourth-place finish.

Mikael Rojeras (Sala, Sweden) finished eighth to lead the men's team.  Rojeras posted a time of 19:38.33.  Kevin O'Brien (Attleboro, Mass.) crossed the line in 20:10.02, good for 17th place.  Stephen Chantry (Williamsburg, Va.) was 23rd in 20:30.72, and six of the next eight finishers behind him were also Jaspers.  Greg Perrier (Dix Hills, N.Y.) (20:36.58), Anthony Colasurdo (Lanoka Harbor, N.J.) (20:37.11) and Shane Beyer (Brick, N.J.) (20:40.02) took places 25-27, while Sean Wheat (Brielle, N.J.) completed Manhattan's top seven in 29th place (20:41.93).

That group finish helped Manhattan secure third place in the team standings.  The Jaspers collected 84 team points.  Host Stony Brook won the team title with 36 points.

On the women's side, the Jaspers were led by Milena Stoicev (Nis, Serbia), who was making her cross country debut after joining the track team last January.  Stoicev took ninth overall in 16:03.35.  Katie Saroka (Blue Point, N.Y.) also had an impressive showing in her first collegiate race.  Saroka placed 17th in a time of 16:30.10.  Alexandra Cappello (Scarsdale, N.Y.) finished 24th in 16:51.08, while Elizabeth Rosenberger (Ramsey, N.J.) was 38th in 17:26.76.  Rounding out Manhattan's top seven were Johanna Petruski (Toms River, N.J.) (40th, 17:37.64), Alyssa Windle (Redlands, Calif.) (44th, 17:53.45) and Janie Turek (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) (46th, 18:01.75).

Manhattan earned 109 points in the team standings.  New Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) rival Quinnipiac took home the win with 37 points.

The Jaspers return to Long Island next Saturday for the Hofstra Invitational.
