Lions Invitational Results
EWING, N.J. – The Manhattan College outdoor track & field team was in action at two different meets on Saturday afternoon. A handful of Jaspers were entered on the final day of the 119th Penn Relays, while the remainder of the squad headed to The College of New Jersey for the Lions Invitational. Manhattan athletes put up solid performances at both competitions.
At the Penn Relays, Phil Ragan (Belmar, N.J.) grabbed fourth place in the men's college javelin throw, recording a best effort of 62.20 meters (204 feet). A pair of Jaspers contested the men's college hammer throw, with Killian Barry (Dublin, Ireland) taking eighth place (53.86 m, 176'8) and Blerim Pocesta (Staten Island, N.Y.) finishing 16th overall (50.72 m, 166'4). Meanwhile, Trevell Moxey (Lansdale, N.Y.) was 15th in the men's Eastern triple jump with a leap of 13.46 m (44'2).
Those Jaspers who weren't in Philadelphia took part in the Lions Invitational in Ewing, N.J., where Wahnetah Carty (Gales Ferry, Conn.) finished first in the women's 200 meters (25.41) and second in the 100 meters (12.37). Milena Stoicev (Nis, Serbia) secured first place in the women's 1500 meters (4:35.70), while also taking seventh in the 800 meters (2:17.97). Doreen Horschig (Lumpzig, Germany), meanwhile, won the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 14.33 seconds.
On the men's side, Rokas Kirlys (Kamaji, Lithuania), who competed at the Penn Relays on Friday, contested both the shot put and discus. He grabbed second place in the shot put (15.19 m, 49'10) and finished eighth in the discus (43.93 m, 144'1). Ian McGinnis (Philadelphia, Pa.) took sixth in the discus (45.92 m, 150'8) and eighth in the shot put (13.50 m, 44'3½), while Pocesta, who traveled to New Jersey once his competition at the Penn Relays concluded, took fifth in the discus with a toss of 46.53 m (152'8).
Matt Perrelli (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Dean Hefnawy (Westport, Conn.) each placed fifth in their specialty. Perrelli cleared 1.93 m (6'4) in the high jump, while Hefnawy's best effort in the pole vault was 4.35 m (14'3¼). Bobby Gebhard (Saddle River, N.J.), meanwhile, took fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 13.27 m (43'6½). On the track, Sheldon Derenoncourt (Patchogue, N.Y.) secured fourth place in the 400 meters (49.41) and 11th in the 200 meters (22.57).
The Jaspers are back in action next weekend at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships. Manhattan's men are the defending MAAC champions, while the women's team finished second last year. Competition from Rider University's Track & Field Complex gets underway at 4 p.m. on Saturday, while Sunday's events begin at 11 a.m.
