TEMPE, Ariz. – Brian McGovern (Yonkers, N.Y.) set a school and Irish national record in the pole vault on Saturday night, as the Manhattan College track & field team opened its outdoor season at the ASU Invitational from Arizona State University's Sun Angel Stadium. McGovern won the competition with a leap of 5.36 meters (17 feet, seven inches), breaking his own mark of 5.06 m (16'7¼) set in 2010. With that effort, he qualified for both the IC4A Championships and NCAA East Regional.
Another school record fell in the women's hammer throw, which was held on Friday night. Lydia Wehrli's (Anieres, Switzerland) best effort of 57.16 m (187'6) was good enough for fifth place overall. Wehrli broke Marina Liander's seven-year-old school mark of 54.41 m (178'6) while also qualifying for the ECAC Championships and NCAA East Regional.
In addition to McGovern and Wehrli's school records, the Jaspers turned in several other standout performances on Saturday. Greg Perrier (Dix Hills, N.Y.) won the 800 meters in a time of 1:52.35. Sheldon Derenoncourt (Patchogue, N.Y.), meanwhile, took fourth in the 400 meters (49.26).
Ian McGinnis (Philadelphia, Pa.), who missed the end of the indoor season with an injury, recorded a personal-best in the discus throw, qualifying for the IC4A Championships with a 49.44 m (162'2)-effort. Tom Bechert (Munich, Germany) also qualified for the IC4A Championships in the pole vault, leaping 4.91 m (16'1¼) to finish tied for ninth place overall. He just missed qualifying for IC4As in another event, the 110 meter hurdles. Bechert finished sixth in 14.89 seconds. In the triple jump, Trevell Moxey (Lansdale, Pa.) grabbed fourth place with an effort of 14.43 m (47'4¼), just seven centimeters shy of the IC4A standard.
On the women's side, Doreen Horschig (Lumpzig, Germany) grabbed sixth place in the 100 meter hurdles, finishing in 14.25 seconds to qualify for the ECAC Championships. The Jaspers also recorded an ECAC-qualifying time in the 4x100 meter relay, as the team of Ashley Bowman (Elmont, N.Y.), Andrea Nyback (Koping, Sweden), Cara Rostant (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and Ieva Vitola (Jekabpils, Latvia) registered a 47.34-second clocking.
The Jaspers return to action next weekend at the Dick Shea Invitational from West Point, N.Y. Competition gets underway at 12 p.m. on Friday and continues at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
