Friday Recap
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - It was a good day for Manhattan College's sprinters at the Giegengack Invitational from Yale University's Coxe Cage on Saturday. Sheldon Derenoncourt (Patchogue, N.Y.) won the men's 400 meters, then anchored the Jaspers to a second-place finish in the 4x400 meter relay. Cara Rostant (Valley Stream, N.Y.), meanwhile, took third in the women's 400.
Derenoncourt took first in the individual 400 by more than .40 seconds, posting a time of 49.40 seconds. He then teamed with Tom Bechert (Munich, Germany), Tyrek Barney (Hempstead, N.Y.) and Joe Martello (Amawalk, N.Y.) to record a 3:20.36 clocking in the 4x400 relay. Bechert also grabbed third place in the 60 meter hurdles, finishing in 8.37 seconds.
Rostant's season-best time of 56.71 seconds in the women's 400 moved her up on the list of qualifiers for the ECAC Championships in the event, and was one of several outstanding performances by the women's team. The day after placing third in the 200 meters, Ashley Bowman (Elmont, N.Y.) added another third-place showing in the 60 meters (7.91). Emmy Koskinen (Sodertalje, Sweden) moved down in distance to the 500 meters and captured third place with a time of 1:16.78. Meanwhile, Doreen Horschig (Lumpzig, Germany) and Andrea Nyback (Koping, Sweden) finished second and fourth in the 60 hurdles. Horschig's time was 8.97 seconds, while Nyback posted a 9.15-second clocking.
In the women's 4x400 relay, Manhattan's quartet of Koskinen, Elizabeth Rosenberger (Ramsey, N.J.), Milena Stoicev (Nis, Serbia) and Janie Turek (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) grabbed fourth place with a time of 4:00.09.
The Jaspers have one meet remaining before the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships. Next weekend, Manhattan heads to Boston to take on a competitive field at the St. Valentine Invitational. Competition gets underway at 9 a.m. on Friday and concludes on Saturday.
