Friday Recap

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - It was a successful day for the Manhattan College sprinting corps at the Giegengack Invitational on Saturday afternoon.  Four different Jaspers posted qualifying times for the ECAC/IC4A Championships at Yale University's Coxe Cage.

The highlight of the meet was the women's 400 meters, where Cara Rostant (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and Heidy Palacios (Yonkers, N.Y.) both qualified for the ECAC Championships.  Rostant, who won the 200 meters on Friday, added a victory in the 400 with a time of 55.56 seconds, while Palacios took second in 56.69 seconds.  They've now both qualified for ECACs in two different events.  Rostant previously qualified in the 200, and Palacios also qualified in the 500 meters.

Two Manhattan men recorded qualifying times for the IC4A Championships, as well.  Abdias Myrtil (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) beat the standard in the 60 meters by .01 seconds, finishing first in a time of 6.97 seconds.  Greg Perrier (Dix Hills, N.Y.) qualified for IC4As in the 500 by posting a time of 1:05.20, hitting the qualifying standard exactly, to place fourth.  Perrier will also run the 800 meters at IC4As.

Other top performers at the Giegengack Invitational were Ashley Bowman (Elmont, N.Y.), who took second in the women's 60 (7.92) and Doreen Horschig (Lumpzig, Germany), the third-place finisher in the women's 60 meter hurdles (9.30).  Karolin Wagner (Ribbesbuettel, Germany) cleared 3.60 meters (11 feet, 9¾ inches) to lead a 2-3-4 finish in the women's pole vault.  Melissa Yap (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Sarah Moore (Irvington, N.Y.) both cleared 3.45 m (11'3¾) in the event.

In the men's 200, Myrtil and Anthony Vega (Patchogue, N.Y.) were separated by .02 seconds.  Myrtil was fourth with a time of 22.44 seconds, while Vega place fifth (22.46).  The 4 x 400 meter relay team of Tyrek Barney (Hempstead, N.Y.), Sheldon Derenoncourt (Patchogue, N.Y.), Dimitri Mobley (Abington, Pa.) and Carlos Petrovich (Yonkers, N.Y.) also had a good showing.  The quartet placed third in 3:20.59.

In addition, the Jaspers sent competitors to the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the Armory Track & Field Center, and Brian McGovern (Yonkers, N.Y.) captured fourth place in the men's college pole vault with a leap of 4.90 m (16'0¾).

The Jaspers' final home meet of the season, the Manhattan College Invitational, will take place on Wednesday at Draddy Gymnasium.  Next weekend, Manhattan will compete in the Millrose Games Collegiate Invitational, which has been moved to the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center and features a full slate of college events this year.
