STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Senior attacker Chrissy Gutenberger scored three goals as the only offense for the Manhattan Women's Lacrosse team who dropped their season opener 19-3 at LaValle Stasium on Wednesday night.
The Seawolves dominated from the start, scoring 86 seconds into the game and notching the first 17 goals of the night. Janine Hillier led the attack for Stony Brook (2-0) with eight points including five goals. She was also one of three players to notch hat tricks as Demmiane Cook and Amber Kupres each achieved the feat.
The Jaspers (0-1) would be shutout in the first half trailing 15-0, but would get on the board 11 minutes in to the second frame when Gutenberger scored on an unassisted shot for her first goal of the season. She would then tally two more in a span of two minutes, one off a free-position shot, and another via a Donna Jo DiNorcia assist.
Freshman goalkeeper Christina Fiorinelli (0-1) made three saves in her first collegiate start while the Seawolves Frankie Caridi made two saves playing in 45 minutes before being substituted in favor of Hannah Perruccio, who made one save as well.
Stony Brook controlled the tempo of the game in almost each facet, winning in draw controls (19-4), shots (26-7), ground balls (15-9), and caused turnovers (17-12). The Seawolves were also a perfect 7-7 in their clear attempts while Manhattan was just 4-12.
Manhattan is next in action on Sat. Feb. 25, when they host Bucknell at 1 p.m. at Gaelic Park.
