Manhattan Falls To Stony Brook In Season Opener

Box Score

RIVERDALE, N.Y.- Six different Lady Jaspers scored to open the 2011 season but Manhattan (0-1) fell to Stony Brook (1-1) 18-6 on Wednesday afternoon at Lavalle Stadium.

“As a team, you want to win every game and today's outcome was not what we were looking for,” first-year Coach Victoria Latino said. “We need to learn from our mistakes and move forward. Overall, I thought it was a good opening test for a unit trying to find its groove.”

Proving there is some truth to “home-field advantage”, the Seawolves came out firing from the opening draw and quickly found themselves ahead in the contest.

Stony Brook's Alyssa Cardillo, Melissa Cook and Victoria Cable scored within the first six minutes of the game, putting Manhattan in an early 3-0 deficit with 24:11 left in the first period. The latter duo would combine for seven goals on the day.

At the 11:42 mark, senior midfielder Phelicia VanOverbeke got the Kelly green and white on the scoreboard for the first time this year with an unassisted tally to cut the Seawolves' lead to 3-1. The two-goal deficit however, would be shortly lived.

Stony Brook quickly answered with three of their own, including Cook's second goal, to make it 6-1 with 5:45 remaining in the period. One minute later, the Lady Jaspers would respond when freshman Maria Toscano notched her first career goal on a free position shot to make it 6-2 Stony Brook. Kalia Gottlick finished the first period scoring on an assist from Cardillo with 39 seconds remaining to make it 7-2 Seawolves at Intermission.

Opening the second period, the schools started quickly by trading goals in the first two minutes. Cable kicked off the scoring for Stony Brook with her second of three goals at the 29:17 mark. Manhattan defender Elizabeth Dugan quickly retaliated off a feed from freshman Kelsey Rehain to make it 8-3 Seawolves with 28:01 remaining. From there it was all red and white as the home team would pull away with six-unanswered goals in seven minutes to make it 14-3 with 19:14 left.

Fighting back late, Manhattan senior attackers Julia Lavelle and Tara Convery, and freshman Carly Eskenazi each found the back of the net in the game's final 10 minutes.

Despite being outshot (28-11) and falling in the turnover column (23-15), Manhattan showed positives in winning the battle for draw controls (14-11) and finishing 2-4 in free-position shots. In the ground ball department, Eskenazi led the way with three while Dugan, Convery and Rehain each had two.

Between the pipes, Stony Brook's Mickey Cahill picked up the victory with Manhattan sophomore Julia DiBernardo making four saves in the defeat.

Manhattan will have two weeks off before welcoming Wagner to Riverdale for the home opener at Gaelic Park on March 2nd. First draw is set for 4 p.m.
