Riverdale, N.Y. -- It was definitely a "tale of two halves" as the Manhattan women's lacrosse team lost their home opener Monday 18-12 to the University of California-Davis in a game played in the morning Gaelic Park
In a back and forth first half, it was the Lady Jaspers who went into the locker room with a 5-3 lead. But UC Davis outscored Manhattan 15-7 in the second stanza to take home the win. Manhattan is now 1-3 on the young season, while UC-Davis improved it record to 4-1.
For Manhattan, Chrissy Gutenberger was once again the high goal getter, tallying four goals, her second consecutive four-goal game. Phelicia VanOverbeke and Elizabeth Dugan both posted hat-tricks for the Lady Jaspers, while Tara Convery and Caralyn Hickey added a goal each. Breana Leonard had Manhattan's lone assist. UC Davis was led in goal scoring by Britt Farquharson with 4 goals and Anna Geissbuhler with 3.
Defensively for Manhattan, Leonard led the squad with 4 caused turnovers and a whopping 7 ground balls. Helen Kerrisk chipped in with 3 caused turnovers.
Manhattan was outshot on the morning 33-18, with Lady Jasper goalkeeper Julia DiBernardo making 9 saves.
UC Davis went out on top early in the match, getting a goal from Geissbuhler just 45 seconds in. But Manhattan scored two goals within the next three minutes to take a 2-1 lead.
After a goal by UC-Davis tied the score at 18:27, the Lady Jaspers scored three goals to go up 5-2 before the Aggies scored with 54 seconds left in the half to make the halftime score 5-3.
After exchanging goals in the first five minutes of the second half, UC-Davis broke open the game with a seven goal run between 23:27 and 13:06 to make the score 12-7. Two goals within 11 seconds of one another by Gutenberger at the 12:23 and 12:12 mark gave the Lady Jaspers some life but another run by the Aggies - this time a four goal run - iced the game.
Manhattan's next game is this Sunday in Pittsburgh when the squad takes on Robert Morris.
