RIVERDALE, N.Y. ? Vermont scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Manhattan (19-10) 3-2 in non-conference baseball action on Saturday at Centennial Field in Burlington. Catamounts' junior outfielder Tom Kelly delivered the game winning RBI single to snap the Jaspers' eight game winning streak.
Senior catcher Jeff Nolet pushed Vermont (6-18) out to a one run lead in the first inning when he singled through the left side with two outs allowing Mark Micowski to score the first run of the ballgame. Nolet went 3-for-4 from the plate on the afternoon.
The Jaspers evened the contest at one apiece in the third inning. Junior center fielder Kevin Nieto helped generate the run by leading off the frame with his fifth triple of the season. Mark Onorati got Nieto across home plate with a hard hit infield grounder.
Manhattan earned a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth courtesy of Will DeRuve's RBI single which allowed sophomore Austin Sheffield to score. Sheffield hit 3-for-4, which included his sixth double of the year.
Vermont retaliated with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and held off the Jaspers the rest of the way to take the 3-2 victory. Junior Justin Milo worked a one out walk, and then scored on sophomore Chad Salem's throwing error which also allowed Nolet to reach base safely representing the game winning run. Kelly knocked in Nolet in the next at bat.
Salem was 2-for-2 and walked twice on the day.
Jaspers' starter Matt Jordan pitched seven strong innings allowing just two earned runs and striking out seven. Although, the freshman right hander was outlasted by senior lefty Justin Albert who twirled the Catamounts to a complete game victory. Albert struck out six and gave up two runs.
Manhattan returns to Van Cortlandt Park for a five game homestand which begins on Tuesday versus Sacred Heart at 3:30 p.m.
