RIVERDALE, N.Y. ? The Manhattan College baseball team fell 2-0 to La Salle (7-6) on Sunday in Philadelphia. Jaspers' junior right hander Tom Costigan twirled a complete game and struck out four, but his performance was matched by La Salle's starter Kevin Fuqua who pitched seven and two third scoreless innings. The loss snaps Manhattan's (5-6) four game win streak.
The Explorers got their first run on the scoreboard in the third inning when junior first baseman T.J. Chism singled into left center allowing Justin Handler to cross the plate. Chism drove in both runs in the contest, while Handler was 3-for-4 from the plate and scored both runs.
Manhattan threatened to get on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth with back-to-back hits from Ruben Perez and Mike McCann, which put runners on the corners with one out. Fuqua was able to sneak out of the jam first by picking off McCann at first, and then forcing Austin Sheffield to ground out.
La Salle tacked on its second run in the bottom of the fifth on Chism's sacrifice fly. Handler scored on the play after advancing to third on John Malloy's double to left center. Malloy had two hits in the ballgame.
The Jaspers forced La Salle to go to its bullpen in the top of the eighth after putting two runners on base. Junior catcher Jamie Fitzgerald singled up the middle, and then Kevin Nieto walked. Explorers' reliever Cody Weiss entered the game and immediately walked Ryan Masters to load the bases. But Manhattan was unable to capitalize on the opportunity as Mark Onorati flied out to center to end the inning.
Weiss retired three straight batters in the ninth to earn the save. Fuqua received the win marking his second of the season.
Manhattan is back in action on Wednesday at Seton Hall. Game time is slated for 3:30 p.m. in South Orange, N.J.
