West Long Branch, N.J. (February 24, 2007)- In the season opener for both teams, Monmouth raced out to a 7-3 halftime lead on the way to a 15-9 win over Manhattan this afternoon at Kessler Field on the Hawks' campus. Alicia Psillos and Brenna Tinari each paced the Lady Jaspers with four points on three goals and one assist.
Monmouth scored three goals in the first 1:39 of the game before Jenny Carman got the Lady Jaspers into the scoring column on an unassisted goal with 26:39 left before halftime. Carman added another goal after a Monmouth tally to make the score 4-2 with 19:56 remaining before the break before the Hawks ran off another three goal flurry to open up a 7-2 lead. Carman added another goal 10:53 before halftime and the two teams went scoreless the rest of the half to send the teams into the locker rooms with Monmouth holding a 7-3 lead.
In the second half, the Lady Jaspers scored three of the first five goals, with two coming from Psillos and the third from Brenna Tinari, to pull within three, 9-6, with 12:16 remaining in the game. The teams traded goals over the next five minutes before Monmouth used four straight tallies to open up a 15-8 lead with under two minutes to play. Tinari scored off a pass from Helen Kerrisk with 51 ticks remaining to provide the final margin.
Tinari would end the day with three goals and one assist, while Carman would score twice and Latino would add one. Rookie Keri Morrison would lead the team with a game-high five ground balls while Katelin Mryglot would record five draw controls.
Ashley Devins made eight saves for Manhattan, and Monica Johnson stopped 11 shots for Monmouth.
The Lady Jaspers get back in action on Friday, March 2, when Manhattan hosts Drexel University at Eastchester High School in Eastchester, N.Y. with game time slated for 3:00 p.m.
