Riverdale, N.Y. (April 17, 2006)- After managing just four runs over the first two games of the its MAAC series with Fairfield, the Jaspers plated six first inning runs on their way to a 10-3 win this afternoon at Van Cortlandt Park. With the win, Manhattan improves to 15-14, 8-4 in MAAC play, while the Stags fall to 11-18, 6-6 in MAAC play.
Manhattan's big first frame started with a leadoff double by
Eric Nieto. After an out, a walk, and a hit batsman,
Mike Garcia doubled home Nieto and
Matt Rizzotti.
Dom Lombardi followed with a double, scoring
John Fitzpatrick, before
Ruben Perez connected on a three-run home run to make the score 6-0 after one inning.
Back-to-back doubles by Fitzpatrick and Garcia upped the Jaspers' lead to 7-0 after two innings.
The teams exchanged runs in the fourth and fifth, and Fairfield added its third run in the sixth on a John Scaife solo homer.
Manhattan would tack on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, as Rizzotti scored an unearned run to provide the final margin.
Garcia and Perez each tallied three RBI to pace the Manhattan attack.
Jesse Darcy picked up his third win of the season, allowing three runs over six innings, while striking out a career-high 10 batters.
Matt Nevins did not allow a run over the final three innings to earn his first collegiate save.
Manhattan returns to action on Tuesday, April 18, traveling to Bridgeport, Conn. to take on Sacred Heart at Bluefish Stadium, with the first pitch slated for 3:30 p.m.
