BASEBALL COMPLETES SWEEP OF CANISIUS, 10-1

Riverdale, NY (May 8, 2005)- Manhattan completed its three game MAAC series sweep of Canisius this afternoon at Van Cortlandt Park, taking the third game, 10-1, behind the third straight dominating start from a Jasper pitcher, as Josh Santerre went 7.2 innings, allowing just one run.

After two scoreless innings, Manhattan cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the third, plating four runs, as Matt Rizzotti belted a grand slam, bringing home Nick Derba, Eric Nieto, and Matt Nevins.

The Jaspers added two in the fourth on a RBI groundout by Nieto and a solo homer from Gary Diaz, two in the fifth as Dom Lombardi plated a run on a RBI groundout and John Fitzpatrick scored on a Canisius error on a double steal, and two more in the sixth as Fitzpatrick doubled home two more to make the score 10-0 in favor of the home team.

Canisus scored a run in the top of the eighth to provide the final margin.

Santerre picked up his fourth win of the season, scattering seven hits while striking out six and walking none over 7.2 innings. Kyle Wirtz finished up, going the final 1.1 innings, allowing two hits.

Rizzotti (2-3, 4 RBI, 3 runs) and Fitzpatrick (3-4, 2 RBI, run, stolen base) each had multi-hit games for Manhattan, which wins its fourth straight game.

Manhattan gets back in action this weekend, May 14-15, when the Jaspers host LeMoyne in a three-game MAAC series beginning with a double header on Saturday at 12 noon.
