GAME 2 BOXSCORE
Riverdale, NY (April 24, 2005)- Manhattan junior Steve Bronder twirled a no-hitter, the first in the seven year tenure of Jasper head coach Steve Trimper, as Manhattan swept a MAAC double header against Rider this afternoon at Van Cortlandt Park. The Jaspers won the first game, 9-6, to improve to 15-11, 7-3 in MAAC play. Rider falls to 10-22, 6-8 in MAAC play.
Bronder faced the minimum over his seven innings of work, as a fielding error leading off the sixth, and a walk to lead off the seventh were both erased by double plays. The right hander struck out two in picking up his third win of the season and first collegiate no-hitter.
Manhattan would receive all the offense it would need care of a two-out solo homer by Nunzio Franzese in the fourth inning.
Joe Moronese allowed one run on five hits with three strikeouts for Rider.
In the first game of the twin bill, Manhattan got a run in the first on a Nick Derba RBI single, and two more in the third on a two run homer by Gary Diaz to take a 3-0 lead after three innings. Jasper starter Chris Cody was perfect through four innings, running his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 33 innings before allowing three runs on two hits in the top of the fifth. A double and a walk ended his perfect start before, after an out, Gene Crimoli cleared the bases with a three run homer to right, knotting the score at 3-3.
The Jaspers would respond with a five run bottom of the fifth to take an 8-3 lead. Marc Giordano drove home the first run of the inning with an RBI single, followed by a Franzese single to center to score another. A double steal brought home the third run before Eric Nieto drove home the final two with a double.
The Broncs would draw to within two with a three run seventh before Cody was relieved by Kyle Wirtz, who allowed just two hits over the final three innings to earn his second save of the season. Manhattan would add the final run on a John Fitzpatrick blast to left in the bottom of the seventh.
Cody improves to 6-0, while Rider starter Will O'Connor falls to 1-4.
Manhattan and Rider will conclude the three game series Monday, April 25, with a single, nine-inning game at 2:30 p.m.
