Manhattan breezes past Marist 4-0

Poughkeepsie, NY — In a game where the Manhattan Jaspers (5-3-1, 1-1-1 MAAC) spent much of its time in the Marist Red Foxes end of the field, the Jaspers wasted no time getting on the board with two goals within the first 11 minutes of the season en route to a 4-0 win.

Sophomore midfielder Talia Omer's header off a free kick from senior defender Julia Nicholas put Manhattan up 1-0 in the 9th minute. Less than three minutes later, senior midfielder Nicolette Caneda found the back of the net for her third goal of the season on a perfect pass in from Sami Derrico

The Jaspers defense held its own led by sophomore goalkeeper Molly Brunk who had four saves by halftime. Marist was only able to get off two shots in the second half with Manhattan dictating the tempo.

With Manhattan up 3-0, the Jaspers offense continued to attack Marist's box. The fourth goal came off the foot of Arancha Antunes in the 85th minute for an Olimpico style goal. The sophomore winger curled in a corner kick that was mishandled by Marist goalie Maddy Catalanotti and snuck over the goal line. The goal was upheld upon video review.

Manhattan now has two Olimpico goals this season after Nicholas scored from the corner spot in the season opener at Fordham. The Jaspers now have 3 Olimpicos in the last 3 seasons dating back to Corrine Jackson's goal at Delaware State in 2022.

Derrico now has as many assists (4) as goals this season as she leads the Jaspers with 12 points.

Brunk is up to 5 shutouts this season following another strong performance from the sophomore goalkeeper and the Manhattan back line. Brunk is one of 3 goalies in the MAAC with at least 5 shutouts this season along with Jordan Spencer (Canisius) and Maddie Crosbie (4).

NEXT TIME OUT

The Jaspers will travel to Emmitsburg, Maryland to Mount St. Mary's (5-5, 2-2 MAAC) on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 4 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
