BUFFALO, NY - The Manhattan softball team won game one of their road series against Canisius 3-2. Game two started today and will resume tomorrow at 2 pm.
Game one was a pitchers duel early, with both Manhattan's Mollie Charest and Canisius's Megan Giese throwing four shutout innings to begin the game. Scoring finally started in the fifth when Sophia Kiseloski hit a solo home run to center field to take a 1-0 lead for the Jaspers. The Jaspers would score a second run in the inning, following back to back errors from Cansisius.Â
However, the Golden Griffins would answer in the bottom half of the fifth, loading the bases before a single and a fielder's choice would bring in two runs to tie the game 2-2. Both teams would go scoreless in the sixth and seventh, sending the game into extra innings. Anissa Villalobos got on base to start the eighth, advancing to second base on a sacrifice bunt, before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Lauren Rende would come up to the plate and slap a single into center field, taking a 3-2 lead for the Jaspers. In the bottom of the eight, Canisius would go down in order, ending the game in a 3-2 Manhattan victory.
Charest threw six innings with 10 strikeouts and one earned run, before Alexandra Hess came in and threw two shutout innings, picking up the win for the Jaspers. Megan Giese threw eight innings for the Golden Griffins, allowing only two earned runs but was charged with the loss.
UP NEXT: The second game of the series was delayed today due to weather, with Manhattan leading 5-2 in the fifth inning. Game two will resume tomorrow at 2 pm followed by the originally scheduled third game of the series.
