STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Manhattan Jaspers Baseball team looked great out of the gate, but a season-high tally of errors nullified the charge and led to a 16-4 loss to the Stony Brook Seawolves Tuesday evening at Joe Nathan Field.
Manhattan, having lost its third-straight game, now sits at 12-26 overall and will head into MAAC Conference play Friday afternoon with a 5-10 record. Stony Brook improves to 21-17 on the season.
Chase Swain led Manhattan with a pair of hits, while
Daniel Perez and
Drew Wyers rounded out the team's count of four.
The Jaspers' bullpen utilized four arms in the effort and
Tyler Babel (0-3) suffered the loss. Babel went two and one-thirds innings and allowed seven runs (five earned) on three hits with eight walks.
Patrick Benn had a valiant outing with a season-high 4.0 innings, allowing just one run on three hits with a walk and a career-best five strikeouts.
Brendan Patterman picked up his first win of the season after silencing Manhattan in his 2.0-inning appearance.
The Seawolves recorded 13 hits and were led by Cam Santerre who went 3-for-5 with 2RBI.
Manhattan struck first with Perez and Swain's back-to-back singles, and Wyers cleared the path with a deep shot to left field, his fifth homer of the season.
Stony Brook countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame, but Manhattan stayed ahead, pushing
Vincent Davis across after reaching on a walk with a sac fly from
Frankie Marinelli.
With one out remaining to retire the inning, Manhattan issued two walks to put the tying run on base. Stony Brook laid down a base hit and capitalized on a fielding error, hit batter, and another free pass to take the lead.
Five more errors ensued over the subsequent four frames, and a deficit of 12 runs could not be corrected. Before tonight's 16-run allowance, the Jaspers had not given up such a large surplus since a Feb. 17 meeting at Alabama (15).
Moving forward, Manhattan hosts Quinnipiac for a three-game conference series beginning Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. in Pomona.
