Jaspers Split in Day One of Spring Games

Madeira Beach, Fl. - The Manhattan softball team split their games today, coming out victorious against Sacred Heart 4-2, before falling 8-7 to Central Michigan in their second campaign in the Spring Games. 

Game 1 – Manhattan 4, Sacred Heart 2

Sacred Heart would start the game off with a home run from Cierra Bender in the top of the first inning, to take an early 1-0 lead. This would be the only run until the Jaspers rallied in the bottom of the third. With two runners on and one out, Lindsey Hoag would hit a sacrifice fly, to tie the game at one. Two batters later, Maddy Weir picked up an RBI double to take the lead, followed by an RBI single by Anissa Villalobos

Sacred Heart would answer in the fourth with an RBI groundout, narrowing the deficit to 3-2. This would be the last run pitcher Sophia Kesoloski would let up on the day for the Jaspers. Manhattan would add insurance in the bottom of the fifth, picking up an RBI single from Bella Cahueque to extend the lead to 4-2. Two scoreless frames for Sacred Heart in the sixth and the seventh would be all the Jaspers would need to secure the victory in game one of the day.

Kesoloski picked up the win for the Jaspers today, pitching a complete game allowing two earned runs.

Game 2 - Central Michigan 8, Manhattan 7 

Central Michigan set the tone early, scoring four runs in the second inning, putting themselves up 4-0. In the third inning Hoag hit a sacrifice fly putting the Jaspers on the board, before Gabby Mazzota would score on a wild pitch making the score 4-2. Central Michigan answered, picking up an RBI single to give themselves a 5-2 lead after three innings. 

No one would score again until the sixth inning when the Jaspers would rally, putting themselves in the driver's seat. Manhattan loaded the bases before Lauren Rende got walked bringing a run in to make it 5-3. Villalobos would come up next, getting the job done with a single up the middle to drive in two runs tying the game 5-5. Lily Fish then reached on an error that would send two more Manhattan base runners home, giving them their first lead of the ballgame, 7-5. 

Central Michigan would answer with a rally of their own in the bottom half of the inning, starting with an RBI groundout to bring the score to 7-6. The Chippewas would then get a clutch single from Carly Sleeman driving home two to give Central Michigan the lead back 8-7 entering the final inning. Manhattan would get the 2-3-4 batters up to extend the game in the final inning, but they would be retired in order ending with an 8-7 loss. 

Ava Metger got the start for the Jaspers tossing 2 ?  innings, before Karissa Spring would come in for her to throw 2 ?, and Alexandra Hess would throw the final frame. 

UP NEXT: The Jaspers are back in action tomorrow at 3 p.m. to play Stonehill, before playing Bucknell at 5:30 p.m. during the second day of the Spring Games.
