Box Score 2 QUEENS, N.Y. - The Manhattan softball team visited St. John's for a doubleheader today, splitting the contests, with St John's winning game one and Manhattan winning game two.
Game 1 – St. John's 7, Manhattan 1
St.John's opened the game with a run in the first with a sacrifice fly. The game would remain 1-0 until the fourth inning when St. John's had an offensive outburst. The Red Storm would score two runs on a double, before a sacrifice fly, and a steal of home would send two more runs home, to make the score 5-0. Manhattan would get on the board in the sixth, when Lily Fish hit a single to drive in Kaitlyn Holly. St. John's would answer in the bottom of the frame with a solo home run from Katie Whittaker, as well as an RBI single from Amy Mallah, to make the score 7-1, a score that would hold through the seventh.
Hannah Mearns picked up the win for the Red Storm, throwing five shutout innings. Ava Metzger would start for the Jaspers, throwing 3 1/3 innings, before Alexandra Hess would come in to throw the final 2 2/3 in relief.
Game 2 - Manhattan 5, St. John's 1
Manhattan would strike first in game two, getting two runners on early, before Lindsey Hoag powered an RBI double to get the Jaspers on the board. Kaitlyn Flood would bat next, connecting on an RBI single to make the score 2-0, before Tajianna Pickett would single herself, driving in the third run of the inning. The score of 3-0 would hold until the third inning when Pickett came back to bat, launching a two-run home run to extend the lead to 5-0. St. John's would score their sole run of the contest in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Celia Macari.
Mollie Charest threw a complete game for Manhattan, allowing only one earned run and four hits, while striking out eight.
UP NEXT: The Jaspers will head to Gaelic Park this weekend for the home opener, in a series with Kent State. The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday, starting at noon, before playing a third and final game Sunday at 2 p.m.
