Box Score RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan College dropped their season opener to the University of Vermont this afternoon, 12- 9, at Gaelic Park.
Battling the cold and snow, the Jaspers hosted their non-conference home opener today against the Vcats. The Jaspers played catch-up for most of the game; however, they could not be shaken off by the visitors.
The first quarter of play remained even for the Jaspers and Vcats, both going goal-for-goal. The Vcats put the first point on the board with a goal from #87. This was promptly followed up by a goal from Manhattan's junior attackman Scott O'Connor. Less than 20 seconds later, the Vcats' highest scorer of the game slung the ball straight into the top pocket of the Jaspers' net. Tying up the quarter with just over three minutes left in the first was Drew Hiner, earning his first goal of the season.
After being outscored 5-3 in the second, the Jaspers took advantage of an underperforming Vcats' offense to tie up the game by the end of their third at 8-8. Picking up a goal and an assist in the third quarter was one of the Jaspers' top offensive players and preseason honoree, Kyle Gucwa, tying the game for the Jaspers with 46 seconds left in the third.
In the final quarter of play, the Vcats outscored the Jaspers 4-1 to come away with the win.
The Jaspers hop on the buses again to Princeton, N.J., to take on the Tigers at Princeton University. The game will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 6:00 p.m.
