BALTIMORE, MD - The Manhattan Jaspers women's basketball program (4-1) continue their 2024 campaign in the Mid-Atlantic Region as they take on the Retrievers of UMBC (3-2) out of the America East Conference for the second time in program history. The Jaspers are RED hot heading to the Mid-Atlantic region for a battle with America East's UMBC Retrievers on Sunday afternoon. The last time these two programs met, head coach Heather Vulin recorded her 100th career victory as head coach on December 3, 2023, inside Draddy Gymnasium. Nitzan Amar paced the Jaspers with 18 points at the time. Fast forward nearly 350 days later, and Manhattan sits half a game behind Quinnipiac for the top spot in the MAAC table, roughly 19 days into the young season. Sophomore guard Tegan Young tacked on a career-high 20 points in her most recent outing against Fordham in the Battle of the Bronx on Wednesday. Despite missing Wednesday's tilt, senior Petra Juric still paces the Jaspers averaging a team-best 16.3 points through three out of four victories this season. As a team, Manhattan averages 69.5 PPG in 4 victories.
Scouting the Opposition:
UMBC Retrievers:
- UMBC is coached by Candice Hill, who is in her first season at the helm. Hill, is no stranger to New York teams, as she was recently on the staff of St. John's Red Storm women's basketball head coach Joe Tartamella as his associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for the Big East university.
- The Retrievers are coming off of two-straight home wins vs. Morgan State and American, 81-72 and 50-45, respectively.
- Last time out, nine different players made a basket as UMBC held off a furious late American University rally to defeat the visiting Eagles, 50-45, on Wednesday night.
- Jaliena Sanchez entered the 1,000 point club after playing Loyola (MD) on November 10, with 1,005 career points.
