Women's Hoops Take Down Peacocks 41-37

Box Score RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan College women's basketball team was victorious 41-37 in a Saturday afternoon conference affair against Saint Peter's, at Draddy Gymnasium.

The Jaspers (10-4, 3-2) were led in scoring by Ines Gimenez Monserrat who recorded 14 points and five assists. Jade Blagrove added seven points and 11 rebounds for Manhattan.

"I'm really proud of the team. We went in at halftime having a rough second quarter," said head coach Heather Vulin. "I told them in the second half the toughest team is going to win this game. I think our team showed toughness but didn't shoot the ball well in the first half. But then I was impressed with the fourth quarter. We held them to four points the entire quarter and we made free throws when needed. I thought the kids played hard for each other."

The Jaspers jumped to a 14-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. This was followed by a 9-0 Peacocks run to begin the second quarter before the Jaspers finally connected on a three-pointer from Gimenez Monserrat, sending the game into halftime with a 20-17 Saint Peter's lead.

The pace picked up in the third quarter with the two teams trading baskets, resulting in a Saint Peter's 33-28 lead going into the fourth. The Jaspers went on a commanding 8-0 run to start the fourth quarter, reclaiming the lead, 35-33 with 6:50 remaining. Following a five minute stretch with no field goals, the Jaspers lead 36-35 with 1:50 remaining.

The ensuing possession, Amar Nitzan hit a big three-pointer to extend that lead to 39-35. Saint Peter's hit two free throws to close it to 39-37 with 1:13 remaining, but could not score on the Jaspers defense down the stretch. Leyla Ozturk hit two clutch free throws with 13 seconds remaining to seal the win for the Jaspers, 41-37.
